CSC 420 - Formal Languages, 3 credit hours Prerequisite(s): CSC 245 with a “C” or better. This three credit course presents the computer science major with a view of the underlying theoretical and mathematical concepts that determine what we are able to effectively compute and how efficiently we can solve computational problems. The course is divided into three major topics - automata, computability, and complexity. Emphasis will be placed on relating the concepts presented to realistic problems that students are likely to encounter in various areas of computer science including programming languages, architecture, and algorithms.
