HIS 354 - U.S. Reform and War, 1876-1920, 3 credit hours Prerequisite(s): One 100 or 200-level history course This course will provide an intensive examination of the period from the centennial year of 1876 to the presidential election of 1920. Emphasis will be placed on the interplay of political, social, and economic forces in the development of the United States into an industrial and world power. Topics will include the rise of industrial and urban America, the impact of immigration, the growth of organized labor, the emergence of the New South, cultural conflict and the technological transformation of society, Gilded Age politics and the crises of the 1890s, Progressivism and the rise of the regulatory state, the Spanish-American War and U.S. involvement in world affairs, the United States in World War I, and the post-war Red Scare.
