HIS 291I - History of East Asia I, 3 credit hours Prerequisite(s): One 100-level history course A survey of the history of East Asia (primarily China, Japan, Korea, and Mongolia) from ancient times to the rise of the Mongols, emphasizing the origins of statehood, interactions between state and society, relations among East Asian societies and between East Asia and the outside world, and the development of East Asian political, social, economic, and cultural institutions. Highlights include the creation of writing in China, samurai power struggles, barbarian peoples of the steppes, and Chinese influences in Japan and Korea.
