History Concentrations

History majors may choose to specialize in one or more historical subfields among the Department’s particular strengths – American, British/West European, Middle Eastern/Islamic, Military, Asian, or Russian History– or in a thematic area that crosses these geographical boundaries, by taking at least three relevant upper-division courses. At least one concentration is required of History majors, and students may choose to complete multiple concentrations. For all concentrations, HIS 260(I,D) and HIS 360(I,X) : Topics in History; HIS 463(I) Seminar in History; HIS 491 , 492 : Departmental Thesis/Project; and transfer courses may be counted where appropriate. The concentrations are as follows:
